Set in 100 year old botanical gardens. Beauty pervades throughout each season. As you drive for 10 minutes through beautiful tree fern forest gullies you will arrive at Strathvea Guesthouse. Only 1 hour 10 minutes from Melbourne CBD. See map and directions.
‘I arrived at Strathvea after visiting my family in Surfers Paradise having survived the heat, noise and bling. What a pleasant surprise! This place took me back to my childhood in Tenterfield NSW. Reminded me of what we have lost from that time, inspired me, gave me new dreams. The thing I miss most about Australia are the sounds of the bush and the silence of the night. The folks that run this place understand the value of what they are preserving. You can’t put a price on this experience. You just need to be reminded of these things that are real. That are Australian. Thank you Deanne and Toby!’
Deanne and Toby are artists and teachers who have lived overseas in their previous lives to running the guesthouse.
They decided to move to the Yarra Valley because they believed it was one of the most beautiful places on earth to bring up their children. Being close to Melbourne but yet set in a magnificent Mountain Ash tree fern forest, with the purest mountain water in the world – they couldn’t ask for a better location.
Strathvea Guesthouse was once upon a time part of the Guesthouse era of the Yarra Valley.
People would arrive in the Yarra Valley by steam train, to then be picked up by horse and cart to be taken to the guesthouse of their choice. Our guesthouse is the last of these guesthouses to be available to the public. When you stay you will see remnants of the old era, like the ticket box where you would collect your key and meal ticket. Or the sliding windows where you could come and get your tea and scones.
It is a time to which we can never return, but a time which evokes an elegance and style of yesteryear. We love the Guesthouse and we hope you do too.

‘Wonderful location, beautiful forest, wildlife and garden surrounds. Excellent accommodation. Cosy log fires, good wine, good conversations, lots of laughs, we all had our own bathrooms, loved our stay here and look forward to returning soon.
